এর পূর্বে আমি এর উপর আরও একটি অধ্যায় প্রকাশ করেছিলাম যেখানে Tag Questions এর মৌলিক বিষয়বস্তু আলোচনা করা হয়েছে এবং এর গঠনতত্ত্ব। যদি তুমি পূর্বে সেই অধ্যায়টি Tag Questions in English Grammar না পড়ে এই অধ্যায়টি পড় তবে অনেক কিছুই বুঝতে সমস্যা হতে পারে।
However, now i want to start my discussion. Below, i have given a chart on the 10 Rules of tag questions and i have also explained those elaborately.

Explanation of the Rules in Chart
ছকের নিয়মগুলোর ব্যাখাঃ
Variation-01:
If an imperative sentence starts with the word (let’s), the tag will be ‘Shall we?’.
যদি একটি imperative বাক্য (let’s) শব্দ দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে tag হবে ‘Shall we?’
Example:
Let`s play football, shall we?
Let`s play football, shall we?
Variation-02:
If an imperative sentence starts with the word ‘don’t/let him/let me/let her/let them, the tag will be ‘will you?’.
যদি একটি imperative বাক্য (don’t/let him/let me/let her/let them) শব্দ দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে tag হবে ‘will you?’
Examples:
Don`t run in the sun, will you?
Let him play the cricket now, will you?
Don`t run in the sun, will you?
Let him play the cricket now, will you?
Variation-03:
If an imperative sentence starts with a verb and indicates Request/order/advice, you will use one of the ‘Will you/would you/can you/could you?’ in answer.
যদি একটি imperative বাক্য verb শব্দ দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং তা দিয়ে আদেশ,অনুরধ বা উপদেশ বোঝায় তবে ‘Will you/would you/can you/could you?’ হবে উত্তরে।
Examples:
Finish the work as soon as possible, will you?
Please stay here for them, will you?
Finish the work as soon as possible, will you?
Please stay here for them, will you?
Variation-04:
If the subject of the sentence is ‘Someone/somebody/everyone/everybody/none/nobody/anyone/anybody’, you will use the pronoun ‘they’ in tag question.
যদি বাক্যের subject হিসেবে ‘Someone/somebody/everyone/everybody/none/nobody/anyone/anybody’ থাকে তবে তুমি pronoun হিসেবে ‘they’ বসাবে।
Examples:
Somebody came here, didn`t they?
Everybody wants to be happy in life, don’t they?
Somebody came here, didn`t they?
Everybody wants to be happy in life, don’t they?
Variation-05:
If the subject of the sentence is ‘Something/everything/anything/nothing’, you will use the pronoun ‘it’ in tag question.
যদি বাক্যের subject হিসেবে ‘Something/everything/anything/nothing’ থাকে তবে তুমি pronoun হিসেবে ‘it’ বসাবে।
Examples:
Everything is similar to you, isn`t it?
Something is similar to it, isn’t it?
Everything is similar to you, isn`t it?
Something is similar to it, isn’t it?
Variation-06:
If the subject of the sentence is ‘Here/there/it’, you will use the same pronoun in tag question.
যদি বাক্যের subject হিসেবে ‘Here/there/it’ থাকে তবে এদের pronoun একই হবে tag question এর ক্ষেত্রে।
Examples:
There was a pond, wasn`t there?
Here is your new note-book, isn’t here?
There was a pond, wasn`t there?
Here is your new note-book, isn’t here?
Variation-07:
In English sentences, only ‘no or not’ is not the sign of negative sentences. There are some other negative words which make sentences negative. The negative words are: few/little/bit/never/hardly/scarcely/barely/rarely/seldom/no sooner had/nobody/none/no one/nothing/without. In this case, you will make the tag in affirmative form.
ইংরেজিতে শুধুমাত্র ‘no বা not’ না-বোধক বাক্যের চিহ্ন নয়। আরও কিছু শব্দ রয়েছে যেগুলো থাকলে সেই বাক্যটিকে না-বোধক রূপে গণ্য করতে হবে এবং তখন tag এর উত্তর হাঁ-বোধকে হবে। (few/little/bit/never/hardly/scarcely/barely/rarely/seldom/no sooner had/nobody/none/no one/nothing/without)
Examples:
They hardly come here, do they?
I have few tickets now, have I?
You never study hard, do you?
They hardly come here, do they?
I have few tickets now, have I?
You never study hard, do you?
Variation-08:
If the sentence is a complex sentence, you will get two clauses or sentences in it. Definitely, you will be confused in this situation. But remember, for making tags, you have to follow the tense and subject of the principal clause. There is an easy method of recognizing the principal clause in a complex sentence. If there is a comma (,) between the two clauses, the last one is principal clause. But if there is no comma (,) between the two clauses, the first one is principal clause
Examples:
As they phoned me, I went there, didn`t i?
The boy waits here though I have ordered him to leave, doesn’t he?
As they phoned me, I went there, didn`t i?
The boy waits here though I have ordered him to leave, doesn’t he?
Variation-09:
If the sentence starts with ‘All of us/some of them/none of you’, you will use the subjective form of the pronoun in tag such as (All of us=we)/(some of them=they)/(none of you=you).
যদি বাক্যটি ‘All of us/some of them/none of you’ দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে tag করার সময় এদের subjective রূপটি ব্যবহার করতে হবে যেমনঃ (All of us=we)/(some of them=they)/(none of you=you)
Examples:
None of us can buy it, can we?
All of us were present in the last class, weren’t we?
None of us can buy it, can we?
All of us were present in the last class, weren’t we?
Variation-10:
If we get the words ‘summer/fire/sun’ as a subject in the sentence, we use the pronoun ‘he’ in the subject of tag question but if we get the words ‘moon/ship/country/river’ as a subject in the sentence, we use the pronoun ‘she’ in the subject of tag question
যদি আমরা বাক্যের subject হিসেবে ‘summer/fire/sun’ পাই তবে এর pronoun হিসেবে ‘he’ বসাতে হবে কিন্তু যদি আমরা ‘moon/ship/country/river’ পাই তবে এর pronoun হিসেবে ‘she’ বসাতে হবে
Examples:
Summer is a hard time, isn’t it?
The country has developed, hasn’t she?
Summer is a hard time, isn’t it?
The country has developed, hasn’t she?
An exceptional form of tag!
Tag এর একটি ব্যতিক্রম রূপ!
Tag এর একটি ব্যতিক্রম রূপ!
Yes, there is an exceptional structure in a tag question if the verb is ‘am’. You can not use the form (am’nt) in tag. If there is the verb ‘am’, you will use the form ‘are/aren’t’ in that place.
হ্যাঁ, Tag এর গঠনে একটি ব্যতিক্রম নিয়ম রয়েছে। এটি হল ‘am’ এর ক্ষেত্রে। তুমি কখনোই ‘am’ রূপটি Tag এ ব্যবহার করতে পারবেনা। যখন তুমি verb হিসেবে ‘am’ পাবে তখন তাকে ‘are/aren’t’ এ পরিবর্তন করে বসাতে হবে।
See the examples:
I am writing a report for the project, aren’t I?
I am not aware of the fact, are I?
I am writing a report for the project, aren’t I?
I am not aware of the fact, are I?
Finally, I want to show you some confused usages of tag questions in English grammar.
সবশেষে, আমি তোমাকে tag questions এর কিছু দ্বিধাযুক্ত ব্যবহারগুলো দেখাতে চাই।
Confusion-01:
You know, now-a-days, some learners follow British English and some follow American English.
তুমি জানো যে এখন শিক্ষার্থীদের মাঝে কেও British English অনুসরন করে আবার কেও American English অনুসরন করে।
See the examples:
He had a nice book, hadn`t he? (British style)
He had a nice book, didn`t he? (American style)
He had a nice book, hadn`t he? (British style)
He had a nice book, didn`t he? (American style)
Confusion-02:
(The short form ‘d’ may indicate the verb ‘would/had’. If the form of principal verb after it is in base form, it indicates ‘would’. But If the form of principal verb after it is in past participle form, it indicates ‘had’
‘d’ এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ দুটি verb কে বোঝাতে পারে যেমনঃ ‘would/had’ যদি তুমি ‘d’ এর পড়ে verb এর মূল রূপ পাও তবে সেটি ‘would’ কে বোঝায় আর যদি রূপ past participle পাও তবে সেটি ‘had’ কে বোঝায়।
See the examples:
I`d meet you in time, wouldn`t I?
I`d completed the task, hadn`t I?
I`d meet you in time, wouldn`t I?
I`d completed the task, hadn`t I?
Confusion-03:
Except assertive sentences, you may get also exclamatory sentences or different forms of subject. You will make tag of those sentences following these examples:
সাধারণ বাক্য ছাড়াও তুমি বিস্ময়মূলক বাক্য পেতে পারো বা subject এর ভিন্ন রূপ পেতে পারো। সেক্ষেত্রে বিষয়গুলো বোঝার জন্য নিম্নের উদাহরণগুলো লক্ষ্য করো।
See the examples:
How fine the morning is,isn`t it? (Exclamatory sentence)
Birds fly in the sky, don`t they? (Different subject)
Kindly do me a favour, will you? (Requesting words in Imperative sentence)
See the examples:
How fine the morning is,isn`t it? (Exclamatory sentence)
Birds fly in the sky, don`t they? (Different subject)
Kindly do me a favour, will you? (Requesting words in Imperative sentence)
